Fall TV 2022: CW finally adds more new shows

We’re rounding out the new fall broadcast shows, but nothing will make you run for the couch.

The Winchesters

8 p.m. Tuesdays on the CW

Look, I didn’t watch “Supernatural,” so this prequel series may be a little lost on me.

But the CW knows its brand, and this show fits right in with demons, magic, chasing and more.

The pilot is a little bumpy as it tries to explain a lot in 43 minutes, but I’m guessing it’ll keep course over time.

Criss Angel’s Magic with the Stars

8 p.m. Saturdays on the CW

I doubt this competition show will last since it’s airing on Saturday nights, but good for Criss Angel for getting a TV deal?

But he looks so bored, and the other two judges are uninterested for the most part as well.

It’s another boring, repetitive competition show, just with magic.

Lopez vs. Lopez

8 p.m. Fridays on NBC

George Lopez is back on TV…he’s aged a bit, but the jokes are the same.

This hacky comedy is like taking “The George Lopez Show” with 2020s generational differences and jokes, racial conflicts, and way better lighting. They even makes nods to the original theme song.

It’s simple and predictable, but there are some laughable moments (most were in the previews though).

Just not with a bang, but with a dull roar.

East New York

9 p.m. Sundays on CBS

It’s another cop show, what can I say?

Look, it’s not my type of show, but I can appreciate its efforts on cop-citizen relations, diversity, race and other issues.

Plus the romance so far is very minimal, which I’m hoping stays that way. Not every show needs a romance.

The music could use an update. I get they’re going for different voices to represent East New York, but it feels very out of place on a CBS show with a mostly 40-50+ cast.

The Real Love Boat

10 p.m. Wednesdays on CBS

This reality show is giving major “Celebrity Dating Game” vibes. Hosts Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell are clearly reading a teleprompter. Romijn has a look of “what am I doing here?” and O’Connell has it dialed to 11.

It’s too bad this show was probably filmed before the latest Bachelorette season, which also took place on a cruise ship. It’s also a total rip on “Bachelor in Paradise” with a bit of “Amazing Race” or “Big Brother” pulled in.

It should’ve at least aired in the summer for the light, fluffy TV season.

Alaska Daily

10 p.m. Thursdays on ABC

Hillary Swank and Jeff Perry are definitely holding the star power in this drama, though it’s not either of their best work.

But the pacing is off. It speeds up and slows down, which was jarring.

There is a lot to throw into one pilot episode, but I’m not sure the drama can gain enough momentum in any of them.

Walker Independence

9 p.m. Thursdays on the CW

I didn’t mind the original version of this drama, mainly because of Jared Padalecki’s charm.

But this prequel spinoff is terrible. I was so distracted immediately by the 2020s hair and makeup on lead Katherine McNamara (the drama takes place in the 1800s), it was hard to focus on much else.

The show can’t decide whether it’s a period piece or a sexy love and crime show, and neither option is good. It’s so overall dramatic it’s borderline cheesy.

Fire Country

9 p.m. Fridays on CBS

To save some head scratching, this show stars the young boy in “The Pacifier.”

This drama kept my attention, even though the character connections are a little too neatly tied.

The pilot presented a lot of plotlines, but it wasn’t heavy-handed.

Winter TV 2022: 3 new shows premiere

OK, more than three shows have premiered, but I’ve got some ideas in the works because new TV shows tend to come in themes.

In the meantime, here are three new shows and my quick takes.

Promised land

10 p.m. Mondays on ABC (now it’s on Hulu)

This ABC drama is nothing like how it was advertised. Bellamy Young, massively advertised because of her work on “Scandal,” is only in two scenes of the pilot.

The show centers on a blended family and its vineyard business; it feels very soap opera-y. There was also a subplot about people crossing the border that made no sense at first until it became a “This Is Us” style flashback.

It’s a lot about family loyalty vs. staying ahead, and what secrets you’ll hide to stay that way.

All American: Homecoming

9 p.m. Mondays on the CW 

The CW should just rename itself the Greg Berlanti network. He’s again an executive producer on this HBCU-set spinoff of the show “All American,” now in its fourth season.

The college sports drama has a good mix of characters, but they all seem rather catty.

But like “Katy Keene” for “Riverdale,” I doubt this spinoff will last long.

Endgame

10 p.m. Mondays on NBC

I’m all for a show that centers on two badass women, even if they unrealistically maintain perfect makeup throughout the day.

Starring Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathé, these women are both after something. I wish it wasn’t so focused on love, but it’s nice to see female leads.

There’s a lot going on in the heist-crime drama — the flashback in the pilot seemed unnecessary, but the show has more glitz and punch than others like it.

Also, they probably should’ve picked a better name; “Avengers” took over this name on Google.

Fall TV 2021: Some shows show promise

New shows are coming, and some may be worth watching.

Here are my quick takes (side note: “Killer Camp” and “The Activists” have been pulled from the air):

Legends of the Hidden Temple

8 p.m. Sundays on the CW

This game show is a remake, and boy can you tell. It feels so 90s, even the prizes (one team got a Razor scooter).

The main differences are it’s adults competing not kids, and it’s an hour instead of a half-hour.

The adults competing is fine, but an hour for a show with only a handful of challenges is pointless.

The tradition of the game feels really forced, and poor Cristela Alonzo feels like she’s gritting her teeth through her hosting duties.

They should’ve aired this show in the summer when people are more inclined to watch pointless game shows.

Skip it (unless you have nostalgia for the original)

9 p.m. Tuesdays on the CW

This reboot of a show from the 2000s has an intriguing presence.

People from all ages, races and time periods end up on Belle Isle in Detroit with no idea what’s happened and unsure of what year it is.

It feels a bit like “Lost” or “X Files” with a strong overtone of government-police-community relations, but while it’s a lot to follow, it could be interesting.

The original ran for four seasons, but I hope they make this remake more of a mini-series. I don’t think the mystery needs to be dragged out for years.

Queens

10 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC

This fiery show is so fun.

The pilot sets up what could’ve been a cute movie about a girl group reuniting, but I’m excited to see it dive deeper in upcoming episodes.

Each girl group member has issues to deal with, but you still believe they can be friends and love each other even in disagreements. And the music performances are full of energy.

Home Sweet Home

8 p.m. Fridays on NBC

I really thought this Ava DuVernay produced show would be so cheesy, forced and sappy. And while there are slow-motion shots and pingy, cheesy music, it’s a heartwarming show.

In each episode, two families exchange houses and try one another’s traditions and activities for four days before meeting up for a meal. There are so many lessons to learn from one another, but taking it down to the family level really brings home some of the important discussions.

I can’t imagine it’ll last too long, and I’m guessing they’ll choose families that are very different from each other, but hopefully it’s for learning, not drama.

Ghosts 

9 p.m. Thursdays on CBS

You may recognize some of the actors in this comedy that’s based on a UK series.

A group of ghosts is stuck living in a mansion, but when a new couple comes in, hijinks ensue.

I feel badly for the actors who play ghosts since they’ll always be in the same costume, and one person isn’t wearing pants.

It’s a bit of a soap opera plot that’s set up in the pilot, so it may have potential, but I’m not sure it’s that funny.

Fall TV 2018 Round 2: Skip it, watch it or give it another chance

I can’t believe I’m bored with new TV.

The new crop of shows is mediocre at best.

The Neighborhood

8 p.m. Mondays on CBS

Verdict: Give it a chance

This comedy has the potential to become a show that has laughs and good lessons about race and relationships. If not, it’s just a show where Schmidt (Max Greenfield, playing a dad whose family moves to a black neighborhood) smiles way too much.

Happy Together

8:30 p.m. Mondays on CBS

Verdict: Give it a chance

While the premise is completely ridiculous (a celebrity moves in with his accountant and his wife), this comedy has some laughs, especially with the cast’s physical comedy.

All American

9 p.m. Wednesdays on the CW

Verdict: Skip it

This drama is “Friday Night Lights” meets “The Blind Side” meets a soap opera (the pilot’s cliffhanger ending was so obvious). Also, pretty sure the main character wouldn’t be able to afford Beats by Dre headphones, but OK…

The Alec Baldwin Show

10 p.m. Sundays on ABC

Verdict: Skip it

If you think “Inside the Actors Studio” is dry, stuffy and impersonal, run away very quickly from this talk show. The format is stale, there’s no audience for feedback, and Alec Baldwin acts like he’s interviewing his guests for a job interview, not a talk show.

The Kids Are Alright

8:30 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC

Verdict: Skip it

This 70s-set show doesn’t make Catholics look great. The semi-happy conclusion happened too fast. I have no idea what compelled someone to produce this show.

The Rookie

10 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC

Verdict: Watch it

Yes, this may be a procedural, but it has heart. The pilot smartly showcased a snippet of every character to develop them in an interesting way without feeling overly expository.

 

What shows are you enjoying?

Award shows 2018: Do network shows have a place anymore?

At the Golden Globes this year, only one out of 11 TV award winners was a network TV show representative (Sterling K. Brown won best actor in a drama series for NBC’s “This is Us.”)

Tomorrow’s SAG Awards only have five network TV show nominations among all the categories.

Do network shows even stand a chance anymore?

Now that Netflix consistently pulls out award-winning shows, with Amazon and Hulu reaching their stride in quality shows, is it time to separate out network shows from paid services shows?

The way people watch Netflix shows vs. a show on ABC, Fox, etc. is so different. You can binge a Netflix series in a weekend, while NBC draws out one season of “This is Us” from September to April or so (but maybe that’s so we can all take a sobbing break).

Plus, Hulu and those networks have advantages network shows don’t. On a network like CBS, you can’t swear, show nudity, depict graphic violence and other things. Rules must be followed. On online networks, the rules don’t apply. Anything can happen. And it usually does.

Another big difference is network shows play to commercial breaks. They place cliffhangers and plot points in just the right spot to keep you watching. On Netflix, it seems like most original drama episodes end on cliffhangers so you’ll continue watching. And Netflix doesn’t even ask the pesky question “Are you still watching?” when it’s an original show. It can play out like one long, continuous story, and viewers soak it right up.

Network shows just can’t play the same game online networks can. So is it fair to pit them against each other in award categories?

Plenty of quality shows still exist on ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and the CW. Should they be recognized in a different way? Or does that just further depict the difference in the TV formats?

It may be time to revisit how award shows handle TV shows.

Fall TV 2017: Two CW shows premier

The CW has joined the new TV game.

While many other new network shows have appeared, the CW is now airing its new shows.

Here’s my take on them:

Valor

9 p.m. Mondays on the CW

Another military special operations show make its debut.

Other ones are better.

The balance on this show is off. The lead is a female who has to work hard to keep her higher-ranking position. While it’s nice that they’re not focused too much on the woman-in-the-military idea, sometimes they overdo it with how she’s not “qualified.”

There are also two relationship storylines that I’m already over. It’s not needed, but I’m sure it was part of the show because of the network it’s on.

Grade: B-

Dynasty

9 p.m.  Wednesdays on the CW

This remake is the perfect kind of soap. It’s filled with beautiful people wearing impeccable clothes and donning perfect makeup. And all those people have dirty secrets shrouded in sexual chemistry.

It’s a bit updated from the original (the setting is different, there are gay characters), but it in no way feels stale.

This drama could definitely be your next fun guilty pleasure.

Grade: A-

New Year’s 2017: 3 wishes for the new year

New Year’s resolutions may not happen, but I can hope these wishes come true, right?

As we usher in 2017, here are my wishes for TV.

No more crossovers

This might be an unpopular opinion, but these two-, three-, and now four-part crossover episodes are too much.

With the success of The CW‘s superhero shows, I get the marketing behind combining all the shows over a week, with each individual show airing a new episode. But when they started these with “The Flash” and “Arrow,” it wasn’t entirely necessary to watch both shows to keep up.

But the recent 4-part crossover between “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Supergirl” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” ended that. I didn’t watch the “Supergirl” part. But “The Flash’s” part ended on a cliffhanger, so then I had to watch “Arrow.” And then “Legends of Tomorrow” finished the saga.

That’s a lot of time to spend on one “event.” And I watch only “The Flash” regularly.

Even though they show what’s happened, it’s still confusing. I felt lost keeping up with some of the story lines because I didn’t know the characters. But I’d be confused not watching the episode of “The Flash” because I might miss stuff.

It shouldn’t be a requirement to watch four shows to fully understand one week of programming. It’s like being an outsider on a show you don’t watch…except you do.

Keep shows available online for at least a month

I made a similar plea for this last year, but I still wish for it.

With Hulu for only subscribers now, it’s more difficult to keep up with weekly TV. It’s doable since networks post content on the websites, but some networks still make you wait eight days unless you verify a cable provider.

But most networks give you only two weeks to watch a show. During midseason breaks, you might get the chance to catch up, but it’s not a guarantee.

We all need time to catch up, even with our favorite shows. So give us a break. Especially in a binge-watching culture, some people would rather watch a few episodes at a time instead of week-to-week.

CBS All Access is the next up and coming thing, especially with “The Good Wife” spinoff “The Good Fight” coming exclusively to it in 2017 (though the first episode will air Feb. 19 on CBS), I’m guessing it won’t be long before TV show won’t ever be free online, but I don’t want to subscribe to multiple TV streaming services.

Fuller House.” “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” “The Exorcist.”

So many shows and movies are rebooted, revived, etc. And yes, it’s great nostalgia. But I’m done.

“The Exorcist” was creepy but predictable. “Fuller House” isn’t that good of a show. “Gilmore Girls” filled a need to hear the final four words…and then sent fans into a tizzy over what’s next.

Sometimes it’s better to just let a show end in its time and be good, instead of filling an empty void in our hearts.

Fall TV 2016: ‘Timeless,’ ‘Frequency’ examine time, skip ‘American Housewife’

October means more fall TV shows.

Here are my thoughts on the latest new shows, based on only the pilot.

CONVICTION

10 p.m. Mondays on ABC

If Shonda Rhimes had her hand in “Conviction,” it would probably air on Thursdays instead of Mondays.

This drama has scandal, backdoor deals, politics, investigations…all under the umbrella of a newly created Conviction Investigation Unit. The CIU investigates claims of innocence by convicted people, but it’s not as nice as it sounds.

Set in NYC, the head of the CIU, Hayes Morrison (Hayley Atwell, “Agent Carter“) is a former first daughter, and the district attorney hires her as a bargain after she’s arrested. And guess what? They have chemistry, because of course they do.

The show is a mix of politics and crime, but it doesn’t grab you. The end of the pilot highlighted many of the characters’ backstories, but I’m not sure the show will have time to uncover it all.

Grade: B

TIMELESS

10 p.m. Mondays on NBC

For a show that’s steeped in historical events, “Timeless” is quite a thrill ride.

A quickly put-together trio of a historian, soldier and coder travel back to time to find a rogue agent, though he might not be the bad guy.

This drama combines sci-fi and history and questions how much one event can change time. Hints of government overrule and security issues pepper the drama, which seems timely.

For those whom enjoy history, it gives a personal touch. I doubt the show will last more than a season, but the mystery will intrigue some.

Grade: B+

FREQUENCY

9 p.m. Wednesdays on the CW

“Frequency” also deals with how changing events affects time, and it’s based on a movie with the same name.

It’s a cop drama, though instead of a father and son communicating 20 years apart through a radio, it’s a father and daughter.

The pilot focuses on saving the father’s life, which of course affects numerous other events in time.

It’s heavy-handed with its foreshadowing and a bit predictable, but since only part of the movie was covered in the pilot, it might deviate from the movie plot in time.

Grade: B-

NO TOMORROW

9 p.m. Tuesdays on the CW

Apocalyptic TV meets romantic comedy.

A man (Joshua Sasse, “Galavant“) thinks the world is going to end, so he has a bucket list. He meets a girl who isn’t sure what she wants and has a health scare during the pilot.

He tries to control her and get her out of her shell, frustrating her, but eventually she stands up for herself.

It’s all a bit cliche, especially the cliffhanger ending, but it’s cute and fits in at the CW.

Grade: B

AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE

8:30 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC

If you’re not skinny, you must be real. Or at least that’s what this sitcom tries to proclaim.

Katie Otto (Katy Mixon, “Mike & Molly“) is the center of the the story, and she’s one of the fattest woman in Wesport, Conn. And yes that’s a huge part of the storyline.

She’s also the narrator, though half the narration was unnecessary and made the character unlikeable.

The sitcom could’ve been good, but it’s full of characters who are fake and superficial. The concerns about weight and family are real, but the show doesn’t come off that way.

Grade: B-

Winter TV 2016: Try NBC’s ‘Superstore,’ skip Fox’s ‘Bordertown’

It’s winter, also known as hibernation time, especially in the Midwest.

But this winter, it might be better to catch up on old series than watching the latest crop of TV shows.

Here is my roundup on some of TV’s winter 2016 shows:

 

‘COOPER BARRETT’S GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE

8:30 p.m. Sundays on Fox

Cooper Barrett is 26. And doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing. But that’s normal, right?

As someone in their 20s, I’d say yes. But that doesn’t mean I found this comedy relatable.

I use comedy loosely, as I laughed out loud only once. At a pig.

The pilot seems far-fetched and boring, but maybe there’s hope for this comedy. Maybe.

Grade: B

TELENOVELA

8:30 p.m. Mondays on NBC

I think my expectations are too high for this show.

It’s a mostly Latino cast, which broadcast networks haven’t seen in awhile. And it’s Eva Longoria’s return to acting on TV (she’s a producer on Lifetime’s “Devious Maids”).

But the premise, a group of people surviving life while working on a telenovela, seems cliche.

It’s funny and over-the-top, but it’s not the best comedy I’ve watched.

Grade: B+

 

SUPERSTORE

Mondays at 8 p.m. on NBC

This comedy focuses on employees of a superstore. You know, the one-stop shop.

The actors, led by America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) and Ben Feldman (“A to Z”) carry the show. For now.

But the writing isn’t strong. Episode 2 has a storyline that some might find offensive. It’s quirky but not in an exciting way.

I think this show has promise, but the plots may not keep viewers interested.

Grade: B

 

BORDERTOWN

9:30 p.m. Sundays on Fox

How can a hot topic become a farce? Put it in the hands of Seth MacFarlane.

The “Family Guy” creator is an executive producer on this Fox comedy, and its humor is in the same vein as his other shows.

Which is too bad. The show focuses on issues such as immigration and racism, but for many people, the stupidity of the jokes won’t allow this show to give an enlightening look to these issues.

Grade: C

 

ANGEL FROM HELL

9:30 p.m. on Thursdays on CBS 

Jane Lynch (“Glee,” “Hollywood Game Night”) is back acting on TV. And she makes the show worth a tune-in.

Lynch plays Allison’s (Maggie Lawson) guardian angel. As silly as it may sound, it doesn’t come off cheesy.

I’m not sure there’s enough plot to carry this show past season 1, but the actors make the comedy endearing.

Grade: B+

 

SHADES OF BLUE

10 p.m. Thursdays on NBC

Who can you trust? It seems like no one on this drama.

The show stars Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta as cops, but it’s a step above regular police/crime procedurals.

It’s a bit more complicated as characters attempt to do what’s right for them, the city, their families …

It could be hard to follow over time, but Lopez is compelling enough to keep watching.

Grade: A- 

 

SECOND CHANCE

9 p.m. Wednesdays on Fox

What if you had a second chance? Jeff Pritchard gets one, but it comes with strings.

The disgraced sheriff is brought back to life by scientists to help save a life, and to test something.

The plot of this Fox drama plays out in a heavy-handed matter, over stressing the ideas of life vs. death and what you would do for your family.

Grade: C+ 

 

DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

8 p.m. Thursdays on The CW

Another superhero show! Yeah?!?

Building off of “Arrow” and “The Flash,” this sci-fi/comic book show follows such a similar plot structure to “The Flash” that it’s boring.

Yes, there’s plenty of action, and I didn’t feel lost watching it without having seen all of the previously mentioned shows, but it seems rather predictable. And frankly, it’s a pain to keep up with that many TV shows to get the full effect.

Grade: B-
